ตามที่สหภาพยุโรปได้ประกาศระเบียบว่าด้วยเศษซากของผลิตภัณฑ์ไฟฟ้าและอิเลคทรอนิกส์ (WEEE) ตาม Directive 2002/96/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 January 2003 on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment และระเบียบว่าด้วยการจำกัดการใช้สารที่เป็นอันตรายบางประเภท (RoHS) ในผลิตภัณฑ์ดังกล่าว

ตาม Directive 2002/95/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 nuary 2003 on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment ซึ่งลงประกาศใน Official Journal ฉบับที่ L37 วันที่ 13 กุมภาพันธ์ 2546 นั้น สิ่งที่ต้องระวังมากในปีนี้สำหรับผู้ส่งออกสินค้าดังกล่าวจากประเทศกำลังพัฒนาไปยังตลาดสหภาพฯ คือ ข้อกำหนดการห้ามใช้สารอันตราย (RoHS Substance ban) ที่จะมีผลบังคับใช้สำหรับสินค้าที่วางจำหน่าย (put on the market) ตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 กรกฎาคม 2549
